Many of the courses offered by Wimborne U3A are known as Self-Help Groups.

What does the term “Self-Help” mean in this context?

These courses have a leader who does not teach or lecture in any way.  The individual members help one another, everyone bringing to the group a small measure of expertise and much enthusiasm.

This has worked well in the past and is useful when a small group wishes to get together without any formal teaching or if a teacher cannot be found.

The “leader” in these groups is merely an administrator for U3A purposes and maintains the register etc.

Members have expressed interest in the following courses taking place.

For the following groups suggested in a questionnaire at the last Open Morning, there are no leaders at present but they could well begin as Self-Help groups:

Calligraphy

Environmental Science

Interior Design

Art History

Basic Astronomy

Industrial Archaeology

Geology

Environment/Green issues

Comparative Religions

Making Music for Fun

Budding Guitar

Gardening

Keep Fit

Square Dancing

Folk & Country Dancing

If you are interested in helping to start any of the above (or indeed any other group) as a Self-Help Group please contact us

and every assistance will be given.
