Poetry: Monday afternoon, Friday morning
This is a group for lovers of poetry with catholic tastes, not for poets as such though there is room for the occasional inspiration from members.
About every third meeting the discussion and readings are about a particular poet.
For the other meetings a topic such as animals, weather, childhood etc is chosen.
Wild and fearful in his cavern
Hid the naked troglodyte,
And the homeless nomad wandered
Laying waste the fertile plain.
Menacing with spear and arrow
In the woods the hunter strayed ...
Woe to all poor wretches stranded
On those cruel and hostile shores!

These meetings are monthly in members' homes; the schedule is arranged one or two months ahead.
An amazing variety of poetry is produced (the Internet is a useful source) and the meetings are enjoyable and usually good for a laugh.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

A second group named Adventures in Poetry
is proposed to begin in the Spring Term on Fridays 10.30 am to 12 noon. This is very much a ‘hands on’ approach to reading and appreciating poems, both old and new. Your personal response to the poems is most important and the Leader aims to guide anyone who has not looked at poems to do so and those already familiar with poetry to do so with fresh eyes and ears.
It should be fun and you should learn new skills through interaction with the texts in interesting and thought-provoking games/discussions/workshops. If you would like to join please contact us
