This is a small group of people who very informally discuss subjects currently in the news.
Current Affairs: Tuesday Afternoon, Town Hall
Back to:  Activities     Programme
Every week about a dozen of us meet to discuss the news and sometimes what’s going on behind the headlines.

We try to avoid party politics so discussions are mostly calm, always friendly, and almost never heated.  Subjects which recur time and again include climate change, the conflicts in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan, and of course, the economic crisis.
Discussion Notes:
As might be expected, the Current Affairs group has discussed a wide range of subjects from climate change to terrorism and not surprisingly, widely differing views have been expressed. There is clearly not space to report in any detail but U3A members might be interested to know about those items on which there was near unanimity.

Last term we agreed that Baroness Scotland should have resigned over her employment of an illegal immigrant, that Roman Polanski should be extradited to the USA and, surprisingly, that, while the BBC were right to invite Nic Griffin of the BNP on to ‘Any Questions’, the programme was unfairly biased against him.

Last year we agreed that the use of nuclear power was necessary to achieve our climate change targets and that a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine depended on the US putting pressure on Israel to halt settlement in the West Bank which was considered unlikely.

We could not see why anyone would want to buy one third of the Royal Mail.
